Saudi Arabia Targets 100,000 Railway Jobs by 2030

Saudi Arabia aims to increase railway sector employment from around 13,000 jobs to 100,000 by 2030.

Saudi Arabia is targeting a major expansion of its railway workforce, with employment in the sector expected to reach around 100,000 jobs by 2030, according to the President of the Transport General Authority (TGA), Fawaz Al-Suhaili.

The railway transport sector currently employs around 13,000 people, meaning the workforce could increase by approximately 87,000 positions if the 2030 target is achieved.

Al-Suhaili said employment in Saudi Arabia’s railway sector has already increased by more than 1.5 times over the past four years as the Kingdom continues to expand its transport infrastructure.

The expected growth comes as Saudi Arabia invests heavily in railways and public transportation under the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.

Public transport projects are currently underway in more than 17 Saudi cities. Major operational projects include the Riyadh Metro and bus network, while Jeddah also has an expanding bus network.

Further transport networks are being developed in cooperation with royal commissions, municipalities and other authorities to meet the needs of Saudi Arabia’s growing population and increasing number of visitors.

The railway expansion could create opportunities across a wide range of occupations, including engineering, operations, maintenance, signaling, safety, technology, project management and other supporting services.

However, the TGA chief did not specify how many of the targeted 100,000 railway jobs would be available to expatriate workers. Employment opportunities for foreigners will depend on individual occupations, qualification requirements and applicable Saudization policies.

Saudi Arabia is also expanding its transport infrastructure ahead of major international events expected in the coming years. Authorities see efficient public transportation as an important part of accommodating increasing numbers of residents and visitors.

The plan to grow railway employment from around 13,000 to 100,000 by 2030 highlights the scale of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing investment in rail and public transport infrastructure.
