Ramadan 2027 Saudi Arabia: Expected Dates and Eid Al Fitr Holidays
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in Saudi Arabia on February 8. Here’s what astronomical calculations say and when the official date will be confirmed.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in Saudi Arabia on Monday, February 8, 2027, according to current calendar and astronomical calculations.
The Umm Al-Qura calendar currently places 1 Ramadan 1448 AH on February 8, 2027, while the International Astronomy Center’s calculations also indicate that the new lunar cycle will begin shortly before this date.
The date remains tentative, however, as the official beginning of Ramadan in Saudi Arabia will ultimately depend on the Kingdom’s crescent-sighting process.
When Will Saudi Arabia Look for the Ramadan Crescent?
According to the International Astronomy Center, the lunar conjunction, or astronomical new moon, will occur on Saturday, February 6, 2027, at 15:56 UTC, corresponding to 6:56 p.m. Saudi time.
The Center has published calculations assessing the possibility of sighting the Ramadan crescent on February 6 and February 7, with visibility depending on location and observation conditions.
Based on current calculations and the Umm Al-Qura calendar, 1 Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to fall on Monday, February 8, 2027.
These calculations do not constitute Saudi Arabia’s official Ramadan announcement. The final date will be confirmed through the Kingdom’s crescent-sighting process.
If Ramadan officially begins on February 8, the first Taraweeh prayers would be performed on the evening of Sunday, February 7, followed by the first day of fasting on Monday.
When Is Eid Al Fitr 2027 in Saudi Arabia?
Based on the current Umm Al-Qura calendar, Eid Al Fitr 2027 is expected to fall on Tuesday, March 9, 2027, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1448 AH.
Under this calendar, Ramadan would run from February 8 through March 8.
However, just like the beginning of Ramadan, the exact date of Eid Al Fitr will depend on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent.
Saudi Arabia will look for the Shawwal crescent toward the end of Ramadan. The official Eid date will therefore be announced closer to the occasion.
Expected Eid Al Fitr 2027 Holidays in Saudi Arabia
Eid Al Fitr holidays in Saudi Arabia vary depending on the sector.
Private Sector
Under Saudi labor regulations, private-sector workers are entitled to a four-day paid Eid Al Fitr holiday, beginning on the day following the 29th of Ramadan according to the Umm Al-Qura calendar.
Based on the current calendar, this would place the statutory Eid holiday from approximately Tuesday, March 9 through Friday, March 12, 2027.
If an Eid holiday overlaps with a worker’s weekly rest days, Saudi labor regulations provide for compensatory time off before or after the holiday.
Employers may also provide longer breaks depending on company policy and working schedules.
Government Sector
Government employees generally receive a longer Eid Al Fitr break than private-sector employees.
Saudi Arabia’s government information portal states that the Eid Al Fitr holiday for government departments and institutions begins on 25 Ramadan and continues through 5 Shawwal. The actual length can vary depending on how the dates coincide with weekends.
For some workers employed under the Labor Law in government entities, separate rules provide for Eid holidays of at least four and no more than five working days, depending on the type of entity and employment arrangement.
Exact 2027 holiday arrangements for individual government bodies should therefore be checked against their official announcements closer to Eid.
School Eid Al Fitr Holiday
Saudi Arabia’s published education calendar also provides a longer break for students.
For the 1448–1449 AH academic year, the general education calendar lists the Eid Al Fitr holiday from February 26 until March 13, 2027, with the dates corresponding to 19 Ramadan through 5 Shawwal in the calendar.
School holiday dates may differ from workplace holidays and should not be used to determine private-sector employee leave.
Bank Holidays
The Saudi Central Bank has already published the 2027 Eid Al Fitr holiday schedule for financial institutions.
According to SAMA, the Eid Al Fitr holiday for financial institutions in 1448 AH/2027 is scheduled to begin on Sunday, March 7 and end on Thursday, March 11, 2027.
Bank customers should keep in mind that individual branches and essential services may operate under special arrangements during the holiday period.
Why Does Ramadan Start Earlier Every Year?
Ramadan does not have a fixed date on the Gregorian calendar because the Islamic calendar follows lunar cycles.
A Hijri year is approximately 354 or 355 days, making it around 10 to 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.
As a result, Ramadan generally moves about 10 to 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
Ramadan 2026 began in Saudi Arabia in February, while Ramadan 2027 is currently expected to begin on February 8.
Over a period of roughly 33 years, Ramadan moves through all four seasons.
How Long Will Ramadan 2027 Last?
Ramadan lasts either 29 or 30 days, depending on the Islamic calendar and the sighting of the Shawwal crescent.
The current Umm Al-Qura calendar places 29 Ramadan on Monday, March 8, 2027, followed by 1 Shawwal on Tuesday, March 9.
This makes March 9, 2027 the currently expected date for Eid Al Fitr in Saudi Arabia.
The date should still be treated as expected rather than officially confirmed until Saudi Arabia announces the result of the Shawwal crescent sighting.
What Happens During Ramadan in Saudi Arabia?
Ramadan is one of the most important periods of the year for Muslims.
During the holy month, Muslims fast each day from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food and drink during fasting hours.
The month is also associated with increased prayer, Quran recitation, charity, family gatherings and community activities.
Mosques across Saudi Arabia hold Taraweeh prayers during the evenings, while Makkah and Madinah traditionally receive large numbers of worshippers during the holy month.
Daily routines across the Kingdom also change during Ramadan, including working hours and the operating schedules of many businesses, banks and government services.
